Ruff and roudy! Always the ringleader,
Always the one who to blame was given,
Always the one who got into trouble,
And always was cussing attached to my name.
I took to the streets, i took to the squares,
Burnt draft card and chanted my soul to the lawmen,
And not a word did they listen to, not once did they care,
And the fire of my soul was drowned.
They cut my long hair and gave me a machine gun,
Took me from school to fight in their war,
They called me a soldier, but I felt like a killer,
And really what else could be expected?
I fought for my country, democracy and Menzies,
I breathed in their chemicals and bathed in their fire,
Now in early mornings i wake for bad dreaming,
And Menzies a knight has been made.
Good men fell in battles through the ages,
Good men have fallen in front of my eyes,
And what is the difference between brave soldiers and young conscriptees?
The difference is that these lads were not prepared to die.
Let the man who wants money go protect our borders,
Let the ones who'd be soldiers go fight in far away lands,
Civilian torture and deaths in the name of freedom,
Are not for a layman, a schoolboy such as I.
As long as we remain on this planet
Wars will be wars and people will die,
I'd fight for my soul, and fight for my freedom,
But damned if i'll fight for a knight in a castle so tall!

This is good. Is it anti-war, or anti-establishment?

I think it's a little bit of both, simply because I don't think australia had anything to do with the Vietnam war and they shouldn't have been there, yet the establishment sent them, and also because almost all wars can be traced back to what is much like a school yard brawl, and therefore pointless. I think that it protests against both.
Thanks for reading.
